ARES Training Requirements

Post by KA2ODP/7 »

Below is an updated list of the basic FEMA courses that all ARES members must take:

IS-100 Incident Command System
IS-200 ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
IS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS)
IS-800 National Response Framework, an introduction

Notes:

-The actual recommended sequence to take the courses is: 700, 100, 200, and 800.

-Courses are available for free, on-line at: http://training.fema.gov/IS/crslist.asp

-This requirement comes from the Montana Disaster Emergency Services (DES) office in Helena. In order for ARES groups to assist or respond in
emergencies/disasters, the state of Montana wants their members to be trained in the basics of Emergency Management. It's all about knowing where a volunteer group like ARES fits into the big organizational picture (Hint: we fall under the "Logistics" section).

-Once you take the required free courses on-line at the FEMA web site, you may be interested in learning even more. There are a staggering number of free on-line courses offered by FEMA on a variety of topics related to disaster management. I have attached a list of a few concerning emergency communications support that might be of interest.
